Modelling the Animal

The photography exhibition “Modelling the Animal” launches at Deanclough in February 2020. Showing work are five photographers - Liza Dracup, Terence Wright, Charlotte Mellor Meecham, John Darwell, Charlie Meecham and Kate Mellor - each focusing on human-animal relationships and the visual representation of animals. Both Liza and Charlie’s work is concerned with archive materials; with Liza it is animal skins kept in museums for reference while Charlie photographs the representation of the dodo. Often the models of the dodo are physically inaccurate with parts of other birds used in their make up. Terence and Kate photograph living creatures and the way they interact through the camera with humans. Terence photographs prize birds which have been trained to pose for the camera while Kate and Guilbert collaborate at play. John and Charlotte both reference childhood, John narrates a story about his obsession with sharks and Charlotte provides a photographic study of children’s ‘cuddlies.’
